Top Ten Underrated Books in Fantasy

September 9, 2014 Memes 5

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week we list our top 10 book-related things. This week is Top Ten Underrated Books in X genre… I chose Fantasy.

1.  The Circle of Magic, The Circle Opens, and The Circle Reforged by Tamora Pierce

Circle quartets If you LOVE fantasy and you haven’t read Tamora Pierce, well shame on you! She’s AMAZING and while not all of her books are particularly underrated… I don’t think that her Circle quartets (Emelan world) gets enough credit. While I’m a BIG fan of her Tortall books, the Emelan world is definitely cool in its own ways. The magic is different with there being your more traditional academic magic and then “ambient” magic which comes from working with everyday physical objects, like weaving cloth or smithing. Then there is the fact that it’s about the friendship that forms between these four kids. It’s nice to read about solid friendships without there being romance.

2. Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Wicked Lovely series So as a disclaimer, it’s just my perception that the Wicked Lovely isn’t super well known… but maybe I’m wrong and just haven’t found my Wicked Lovely fangirls yet. I like how the series is pretty much made up of companion books, but still keeps the main characters from the first book around. I also like the different kinds of faeries: dark, summer, winter, high faerie courts.

3. The Young Wizard Series by Diane Duane

Young Wizard's seriesSoooo many books in this series 🙂 It’s simply wonderful. I think maybe that these books are more so underrated for my generation, as Harry Potter pretty much stole the show for anything relating to wizardry. BUT this is a very different kind of wizardry, a bit more technical and involving a special language. And there are different species/aliens and the main characters go to different worlds. It’s a bit science-fictiony, but VERY interesting. Also book 10 is supposed to come out in 2015!!

*whispers* I’ve never read a Tamora Pierce novel. I think I started one when I was 10 or so, but for whatever reason never finished it. I don’t think I can even find her books at the bookstore anymore! Or maybe I’m just looking in the wrong section 😉 I’ve heard she’s a fantastic fantasy author though – I really do need to try to read at least one soon!

I read Wicked Lovely a little while ago and I just wasn’t that huge of a fan of it. I liked the idea, but in the end it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Heyyyy I remember the Wizard series! I never actually picked it up, but it sounds really cool! Also, I have read most of Tamora Pierce, BUT I FORGOT EVERYTHING, pretty much. So I will be doing a reread sometime in my life!
